guided struggle - Disinfestazione.
Abstract: The switching from a calendar-planned struggle
to a guided one, determines a drastic reduction in the number
of actions taken. In this issue is described the innovative
experience lived by the Legnaro Municipality (Padua’s Province)
which, in 1998, gave-up the actions-at-regular-intervals
philosophy in favour of a just-when-‘n’-where-needed approach.
The result was a cost reduction and a significant improvement
in action effectiveness with a remarkable reduction in the
Aedes albopictus population and an almost total disappearance
of Culex pipiens

Abstract: Both photo-period and temperature affect the laying of diapausant eggs in Aedes albopictus.
The knowledge of the time period at which winter eggs are laid, allows to adjust the actions
aimed to contain their number thus slowing down the infestation dynamics for the following year.

Abstract: Rice fields present mosquitoes with the best conditions for their development.
Variations in their populations are deeply influenced by agronomical techniques which trigger

the results of a study undertaken in the Po river Delta rice fields are presented

Abstract: Polyphagia and the near lack of specific predators, have allowed Metcalpha pruinosa to spread rapidly in our territory,
where it can reach high densities of populations. The chemical control has proved to be of scarce effectiveness
with a heavy environmental impact. The solution to the problem rests in the biological struggle
thanks to the adoption of Neodrynus thyphlocybae, a parasitoides

Abstract:Micro-capsulation allows the insecticide to withstand the decaying action of environmental
factors thus protracting its action. Besides, its formulation determines a better floating thus reducing t
he rate at which the larvicide becomes blocked to the bottom by debris. The ovicide action of this product is worthy of interest

Abstract: A mosquito-control technique carried out at
top organization levels and with outstanding results has
a name: EID. The Inter-departmental Entity for mosquito
Destruction, sub-divided into the Mediterranée,
Atlantique and Rhone-Alpes seats, represents a datum-point for all those who wish to win the tough battle
against mosquitoes’ proliferation. EID is a public organization managed
as a private enterprise, with its own personnel and funds;
it employs planes and helicopters, mapping and GPS for the control of mosquitoes
over vast wild areas as well as in urbanized sites. Its personnel, which
is steadily employed during winter months, is devoted to implement strategies
meant to prevent the formation of larval hotbeds, to maintain and re-build
coastal dunes and to fight coypus.

against tiger-mosquito: An attempt to eradicate
Aedes albopictus with the “door-to-door” technique
at Montegrotto Terme’s Municipality - Disinfestazione & igiene
ambientale
Abstract: Eradicating tiger-mosquitoes from a well-established hotbed seemed an impossible task as remotely as 1997.
At Montegrotto terme’s Municipality (Padua’s Province) however, a test was carried out according to which, for two consecutive summers
(1997 and 1998), a team of exterminators went door-to-door to get rid by mechanical or chemical means, of each Aedes albopictus’ hotbed.
In effect, the mosquito’s presence dropped at levels so low as not to be perceived by the people. Nevertheless,
the insects survived in those dwellings that could not be treated because of the owners’ absence (on summer vacations) and quickly
re-colonized the entire area as soon as the treatment ended. Therefore, the “door-to-door” technique can be kept in mind as a useful educational
tool for the townspeople but its effects in terms of infestation reduction don’t last long enough to be considered an economically
acceptable control method.

Disinfestazione &

Abstract: The typical habit of the tiger-mosquito of setting its colonies mostly in private estates, makes disinfestation actions almost
useless since these actions are necessarily limited to the public areas, thus forcing town Administrations to carry on
educational programs for the townspeople. Anyway, this is not an easy job because people have become sort of indifferent
to the continuous hammering of commercial inputs. Leaflets and posters must be carefully and learnedly figured in order to be effective;
moreover, they have to be supported by other communication techniques such as school lessons, informative soirees, stands and kiosks, stage perfomances

Abstract: It is a common fact that often the very operators lack the necessary knowledge to perform their job at the very best.
This catalogue is dedicated in particular to the municipal Technicians who have to evaluate mosquito disinfestation plans, to
disinfesting operators and to privates who often overlook some atypical hotbeds because their attention is devoted to the
classical spots such as under-vase saucers and gutters, in the case of the tiger-mosquito. This catalogue shows those hotbeds which
are attended by the main kinds of mosquitoes found in Italy together with an indication of their “productivity” in terms of adult

Abstract: The reduction of resources on which public Administrations can rely, compels them to rationalize expenses also
in the sector concerning the infestants’ control.
Less expensive projects aren’t necessarily less effective since, quite often, considerable sums are spent in side-details having
a poor final utility. Modern technologies can help in optimizing resources but if foolishly employed,
they cause a raise of costs without a corresponding reduction of the infestants, which remains the target of every disinfestation plan.
